HSA Youth Summit 2023 “YOUth Got Next”: Virtual Premiere

MONROE, LA – Northeast Delta Human Services Authority (NEDHSA) is set to host a virtual premiere of its 2023 Fall Youth Summit on Tuesday, January 30, an effort to increase awareness of underage drinking, drug use, and mental health. The public is able to watch on Facebook Live and YouTube.

The theme for the Youth Summit was “YOUth Got Next,” which focused on the impact youth can make in the community and help them understand the power within themselves. This event aims to raise awareness of underage drinking and help youth recognize their power for positive change.

NEDHSA Executive Director Dr. Monteic A. Sizer said this event continued the momentum of the agency’s prevention and wellness initiatives.

“We are taking action on the social determinants of health that we know to exist in our communities,” Dr. Sizer said. “Events like this can help reduce youth truancy, increase grade performance, and ultimately graduation rates. And even more so, create more productive citizens who have been transformed by what we’ve started at this type of event.”

As part of NEDHSA’s continued effort to build a unified community where individuals thrive and reach their full human potential, targeting adolescents plays a crucial role in accomplishing that. The key message was to raise awareness and reduce the incidence of underage drinking and other data-driven priorities in northeast Louisiana. This event showed adolescents that their success and well-being are top priorities and that NEDHSA is dedicated to reducing both underage access to alcohol as well as excessive drinking by underage youth.

The Youth Summit was a live in-person event that welcomed more than 600 high school students on November 15, 2023, at North Monroe Baptist Church. It featured keynote speaker Louisiana-based Gospel Hip-Hop artist Dee-1, Former Louisiana Artist of the Year Vitus Shell, and fitness entertainers Jiggaerobics.

Dr. Sizer added: “We understand youth and young adults are looking for authenticity and a place to belong. They are looking for genuine connections to be able to express their hopes, fears, and dreams freely.”
