Louisiana was ranked last in the 2015 America's Health Rankings Annual Report edition. This benchmark report is the longest-running, comprehensive state-by-state study of our nation's health. The report ranks strengths and challenges and helps us understand how Louisiana compares in healthy behaviors, determinants and outcomes. The report revealed that 24% of people in Louisiana smoke compared with 18.1% nationally.*
According to the Louisiana Public Health Institute, almost one quarter of adults in Louisiana smoke, ranking the state 43rd in the nation in smoking prevalence. Tobacco use kills more people each year than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drug use, murders and suicides combined. Yet it is the single most preventable cause of death in Louisiana and the United States. 11.8 million packs of cigarettes are purchased or smoked by children in Louisiana each year, according to Quit With Us, Louisiana. Almost 300,000 kids are exposed to secondhand smoke in the home.
